Trash Pile at Cullen Gardens

Some of the detritus left from the village

I recently went on a walk through the now closed Cullen Gardens and Minature Village, with a couple freinds. The experience was kind of depressing, walking along the paths that used to be lined with minature urban sprawl, liliputan suburb and pristinely kept gardens, reduced to fraying wires, dilapidated tiny train tracks, overgrowth and trash heaps. It really is sad that such an amazing place no longer exsists but in memories and pictures.

I would like to to return after finding old images from the village and compare them to what remains.

We’re expanding!

Sunday, April 13th, 2008

Well I mean I’m expanding, this blog to show more of my work in other classes, and fun as well as thesis, so I can share easier.  Comming soon images and a sound sample of my color coder, my first new circuit bent instrument in almost a year, and updates to the screaming rainbow (it now has labels on it’s buttons that make sense)

Hello World

Monday, April 7th, 2008

Hey Everyone reading this, friends, family, loved ones, and even people I havn’t met.

I’m taking a break from school right now cause stress really got to me, and I couldn’t continue the unhealthy lifestyle I had put myself into.

I made some bad choices, and let others effect me far more negatively then I thought. This is not one of those blogs where I point out this person or that person, this blog entry is for me.  To let anyone reading know, yes I’m alive and doing much better, and yes I’m ok.  My art related stuff will follow once I’ve relaxed a little more.   ta ta for now

Canadan, out!

This Blows (no longer)

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

Look it’s all fudged up. Ok so I did get the embedded video working, and then when I published it, it when all sour again. This will be dealt with ASAP.

Well it’s working now, and all i did was re-paste the embed code from YouTube.  Technology is so weird.

I really need a website

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

I know, I know, I’m an interactive media artist without my work online. I have no excuse other then whenever I try I change my mind as to how it should be formated, or look, or be organized.  My solution: add my art to my blog one piece at a time till I get sick of that and then do my site.  Coming soon, documentation of some PBF things and some of my circuit bent instruments.

Obligatory Thanksgiving Post

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

Happy Thanksgiving everybody, and if Dan 1.o reads this yes my family actually does celebrate American Thansgiving, who knew?

Ok, On to business, It’s wonderful how a little distance from campus can lower your stress. I wrote about three pages of my thesis paper today, after finding my Adbusters collection (“the art fart issue” is really good). I found what it was that what I needed to tie together my ideas. I’ve been having some difficulties, I’ve known what I’ve want to do for my main thesis idea for a while but not so much why. Well more specifically why my work is so abrasive, among other things. I’m not done no, but I’m alot closer, and later tonight I’m gonna print out/ look at all the other notes and things I’m written and tie the paper more together, when I’m a little more confident with it I’ll have a copy up here, but before that I’ll be sending it to Jason.

I’ve recently become very involved in making things by reusing plastic bags for my Art meets Ecology class. While doing this I realized several things, which have helped me alot.

1. I really like sewing.

2. I probably should have become a fibers orGFA, but I’m happy with where I am now, and as for GFA, I probably wouldn’t have found direction until now anyway.

3. The more ways of making, essentially the more skills you have the better off you are.

4. I can sell what I make, and show people how to make them themselves and still make money.

The last one may sound silly but, it’s a staple of DIY culture. Making things out of plastic bag fabric (plastic bags ironed to be almost a papery material) isn’t new, but I’ve been pushing it. To see what I’m doing with it you’ll have to wait till the book goes to print, hopfully by mid Deceber Let me assure you though, it will be cool, and you will be able to make it all yourself, or buy it if you don’t want to.

Oh and back to thesis this idea of re-use is prevelant through-out my work, just as my interest with sound, as such I’ve imbraced it. My room instrument idea, I don’t know if I’ve bloged about it yet, well I will here. I found that the peices of metal used in computers and other electronics inclosures (think inside old computer towers) make great tones when you hit them, really beautiful sounds, so I’m making a room sized hanging xylophone with them, in may include other discarded material. My insperations for this being, I collect lots of old junk beacuse i hate throwing things out, so I had a lot of broken computers, and the fact that comptuers are really a poorly designed idea, they don’t last long and are terribly inefficient use of materials for the length of time that they work, comercial models at least, those being just a few reasons. The web tid bit i found out about this is that most computer “recyling” programs, arn’t really that at all. (place link here when I find it again) Some companies that have computer recyling prgrams ship the computers to asia, where they are bashed and ripped apart my poorly paid workers, who are exposing themselves to hazardous cemicals, on top of this broekn CRT’s arn’t actually supposed to be shipped out of the county, but the goventment can’t check every cargo ship that comes and goes out of this country, as this lead paint fiasco is a testament too. So where was I going with this, oh yeah, I want my project to be a “cleaner” recycling program, as it is I scrounge old electronics fro parts, slowly desodering all that I can and then I’m leaft with lots of usful spare parts, beutiful empty PCB and lots of plastic and scrap metal. So I thought why not start asking for and let it be know that I’m looking for peoples old technology, as part of the project. I’ll take it off your hands, If you’re close enough I’ll come and pick it up. Probably early next semester I’ll organize a broken tech drop off day, where anyone who participates, gets to know that there old computers, printers, VCR’s, CRTs, old game consoles, etc, will be put to actual good use and wont harm anyone but me, who is doing this willingly. I was thinking as insentive I’d give away voucers for discounts on products and objects made from these meterials. The more you give me, the more you get off essentially. So yeah more on this idea as it developes.

Notes on a Crit

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

So I had a crit in my video art class last friday and I found it especially inlightning because I got an outside perspective on interaction in art work.

An overwlming amount of students and the prof felt that when they go to a gallery they don’t like it when a work needs their interaction to be successful, they feel like it’s incomplete.

On the other hand i talked a bit after to several of my peers in the class and it seems that interaction with the audience, viewer etc. is fine, and in fact creative if used in musical performances.

The piece that was being crited was a performance where I played the Screaming Rainbow for 25 minutes. One student brought up and others agreed that it would be interesting to play with the Rainbow in other situations, play with using it as a sensor, since most of it’s music making elements are sensors (the photocell and FSR) and see what certain things (video and light and other images) sound like, and film this.

We also talked about repeatability of performance and live perferformance. One person was very intrigued with my hand motions using the Rainbow, and mentioned how gentle and sexual they seemed in a way, once this was said more similar comments followed.

The group was interested in seeing me do a live performance using effect pedals etc, and I have a fan who now wants to be my cinematographer, which is amazing.

From this crit 5 came up with a few ideas that the group mentioned and also from things the discussion made me think about. I want to expore possbly “writing” music for a photocell instrument in the form of video with changing colors and have several photocells in front of the screen, playing a screaming rainbow type instrument. This way it’s more an automatic music maker playing something I intended it to play, but will always sound different and never be quite the same because as people watch it and move by their motions will block light or reflected it and change the sound of the piece in subtle and not so subtle ways.

Oh and and several people wanted me to make a Theremin, I might now just.

Dan’s got a new mac and he’s quite happy

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

First of all, Thanks Mom and Dad, for the much needed new computer. I don’t mind that it’s my next Christmas, Birthday and graduation present and then some, I’m just glad I have a brand new super fast mac.

I’m sitting in my dinning room typing on my brand new 15” MacBook Pro. I just finished installing a ton of open source programs from this site. I suggest it to new and old mac owners alike.

Wow, I’m a mac owner. I’ve wanted one ever since I used an iMac in high school. I mean I have other macs, but it feels awesome to finally have a fully functioning mac of my very own.

So, thanks again Mom and Dad.
